The Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA), recognized by Sports and Youth Welfare, BTC (Assam) was formed in 2007 at Kokrajhar, the head quarter town of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Assam (India) with a view to preserve, revitalize and to promote indigenous games being played by our forefathers since the time immemorial. The association was formed at the utmost efforts of late Ayung (Grand Master) Chanakya Brahma of Kokrajhar who worked and researched on different indigenous games played by the Bodo and other tribal communities over the last twenty five years.
We have been working hard for the preservation and revitalization of indigenous games like Gila, Batha, Daria Pantha, Dhop, Khomlainai, Daobo Aithing, Daoka-Daodwi, Kwi, Bwrai-Buri, Khikor, Benglur, Bwrla Gaonai, Dongfang Bukunai, Gondrai Sibnai, Bwrla Gaonai, Gor-la, Dahal Thungri Sibnai, Mwkra, Amwl Dimwl, Bwlw Sunai, Finis, Chol, Goncha Swnai, Dongfang Surufnai, Jakra Thangkinai, Gonsa Sibnai, Khuntia Bukunai, Bikar etc. Of these indigenous games, the Khomlainai (Bodo Wrestling) has attained international attention and now has separate association with name and stye-"Khomlainai Federation of India (KFI)" recognized by Martial Arts Authority of India and being transformed to Khomlainai Martial Art (Modern Khomlainai). Besides, Gila which is one of the most primitive games of the Bodos were being revitalized and efforts for promotion of Gila, Daria Pantha, Batha, Amwl Dimwl and Bwrai Buri are being made by the BIGA.
The BIGA has been organizing the Bodoland Indigenous Games Festival every year since 2008 in BTC districts but the participations are not confined to four districts of BTC. The participants from other districts of Assam like Karbi Anglong, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Dhemaji and Nogaon also participate the festival. Besides, the association organizes inter district and open Khomlainai championships. The competitions of indigenous games in four events have been being organized at Baokhungri Festival in Kokrajhar every year and demonstration of Khomlainai has been showed in different parts of the country including China and Nepal. The KFI has organized International Khomlainai Championship at Kokrajhar in 2009 where participants from the countries lime Australia, Bhutan, Nepal, Mynmar, Africa, Bangladesh and Thailand took part in the event. The national level competitions have also been organized in Gujarat and Assam. The BIGA organizes district level indigenous games festival to bring awareness and new encourage among the upcoming generations.
